Arbitration Battle Could Rewrite League Table

Arbitration Battle Could Rewrite League Table

PRETORIA, SOUTH AFRICA - OCTOBER 30: John Comitis, owner of Cape Town City during the Betway Premiership match between Mamelodi Sundowns and Cape Town City FC at Loftus Versfeld St

Cape Town City have lodged a formal objection with the Premier Soccer League (PSL) regarding the decision to resume the match between SuperSport United and Lamontville Golden Arrows in the second half recently.

The match, which was initially stopped due to a floodlight failure on February 23, 2025, was eventually completed last Thursday.

The Citizens are challenging the PSL's decision based on Article 14.16 of the PSL rules, which states that the game should have resumed within 48 hours.

Cape Town City argue that this rule has not been followed, and therefore, the decision to resume the match in the second half was not valid.

City owner John Comitis told Soccer Laduma that the arbitration will be held on Wednesday, June 4, at the PSL Offices in Johannesburg to ensure the correct procedure is followed.

Speaking exclusively to Soccer Laduma, Comitis emphasized that rules exist to be adhered to.

"Wednesday is the arbitration. You know rules are rules and they are clear. We are just following the rules of the game according to the rule book right now. And mind you whoever loses will take it to next level, the league will start late," Comitis told Soccer Laduma.

The outcome of this hearing will determine whether the match proceeded correctly, as it ended in a 1-1 draw, or if further action will be taken.

The result of this objection could have significant implications for Cape Town City's participation in the Promotion/Relegation playoffs. The team's fate will depend on the outcome of the arbitration sitting and the PSL's adherence to its rules.

As things stand now, both Cape Town City and SuperSport United finished on 27 points, but United finished above City on goal difference, which led to City falling into the relegation/promotion playoffs.

The PSL will now have to defend its decision to allow the match to resume outside the stipulated timeframe, with potential far-reaching consequences for multiple clubs in the league.
