Khune Was Considered To Work With Motaung In Marketing?

With Sekhukhune United having reportedly shown interest to sign Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune when his contract expires at the end of the season, the Siya crew provides an update on what Amakhosi could do to keep him at the club.

The Siya crew had reported how Sekhukhune had seen the signing of Khune to be key to step up their profile and build their brand beyond South Africa.

Siya sources close to Naturena have now indicated that the club is looking at keeping the Bafana Bafana legend and were considering both a coaching and marketing post for him.

The source added that even though his playing contract ends in June this year, Khune is expected to stay on much longer at the club, in a different capacity.

"He is back with the team now and the management want to honour him for all the good years and service to the team he gave, by giving him a coaching job at the club," said the Siya source.

"They were also considering him in the marketing department to work with Jessica (Motaung) because of his popularity. They really think the coaching job could be the right one at the moment," revealed the source, who has hinted that the marketing position is probably not a favoured option anymore.

"For now it's just an offer. Nothing concrete has been agreed yet but it seems all will work well as things stand right now," the source observed.

A second Siya source added that the club doesn't want to lose a legend of the club like Itu (Khune) just because of one mistake and that's why they are giving him a new  contract but in the coaching department.

"They have lost many legends to other teams before and they don't want to do the same with Itu and that's why they are offering him a job and a contract in the coaching department. Of course, it will do with goalkeeping coaching but (he can) also help in other areas.

"He is a legend and they want to honour him as such, hence the talks which are ongoing about his new post at the club," the source added.

A third Siya source stated that offers and interest from other clubs have underlined to Chiefs that Khune is still of high value to South African football.

"The suspension didn't mean they didn't value him. They suspended him and put him on special programmes because they still value him and want him to stay at the team. They could have expelled or fired him if they didn't value him. So, the interest from other clubs have just proven that and they want to make sure they keep him, honour him and show him that he is a legend at Chiefs," the source concluded.

Soccer Laduma contacted Chiefs for comment but no response was received by the time this story was published.
