Interest In Maritzburg United Defender Snubbed

Interest In Maritzburg United Defender Snubbed

Brian Onyango

In their search for quality defenders to add to their respective teams, Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates might have to look further than Maritzburg United's Brian Onyango, as the player is seemingly unavailable for a move during this transfer window.

The big Kenyan centre-back has been on the radar of the PSL's big guns in recent seasons, with Sundowns and Pirates showing serious interest in his services.

However, the KwaZulu-Natal outfit that the player has been with for the last four years appears to be reluctant to part ways with him.

The Team of Choice is keen on extending the player's contract to keep him at the club for longer, as reported in edition 1127 of Soccer Laduma.

The 24-year-old player's current deal with the Pietermaritzburg outfit is set to expire at the end of the month, and according to sources, plans are in place for him to extend his stay with the club.

"Maritzburg won't look to lose any of the players other than the two that are leaving. The two players that are leaving are (Fortune) Makaringe and (Siphesihle) Ndlovu. The club won't want to lose many of the team's top players after what happened this past season with regards to fighting against relegation," said the source.

In one of the ways to strengthen the team's defence, as the club wants to avoid having to fight against relegation again next season, Maritzburg have added Kwanda Mngonyama from Cape Town City as one of the new signings.

Meanwhile, Onyango missed out on selection to Kenya's Africa Cup of Nations squad for the upcoming tournament in Egypt, owing to an injury.
