'4 Years Ago He Was In ABC Motsepe, Now He's At Club World Cup'

After a dream FIFA Club World appearance, Esperance midfielder Elias Mokwana's agent Pontsho Madumo has opened up on the humble beginnings of the Bafana Bafana attacker.

It would have been seen as being overly ambitious if Mokwana believed he could be playing at the inaugural 2025 FIFA Club World Cup and not in the colors of a South African team.

The 25-year-old, after setting tongues wagging for Sekhukhune United in the PSL, instead of making a move to one of the big clubs locally, he was whisked away up North, to Esperance de Tunis, who won the race for his signature, ahead of the likes of Kaizer Chiefs, who were strongly linked with the KwaMhlanga native attacker last year.

A move that the former Sekhukhune midfielder would not regret, as he has solidified his place in the Bafana Bafana squad after he had also a debut campaign in the CAF Champions League for Tiraji, before an elimination by Mamelodi Sundowns in the quarter-finals.

After Esperance were crowned Tunisian Ligue 1 champions in May, Mokwana switched focus to the 2025 FIFA Club World, where they were eliminated in the group stages, finishing third in Group D after a 3-0 defeat to Chelsea.

The former Platinum City Rovers midfielder is reportedly among a few players of Esperance who attracted interest from a number of clubs in Europe, including in countries such as France, Turkey, Belgium and Portugal.

Madumo has expressed delight in the progress made by Mokwana, as he reflected that four years ago he was an unknown playing in the ABC Motsepe League.

"We're happy as Cream Sports Management with the progress of the boy, I mean the past four years he was playing in the ABC Motsepe League and now he's playing at the Club World Cup," Madumo of Cream Sports Management told Soccer Laduma.

"We're happy. We wish with his performances (at the Club World Cup) will attract scouts and for him to get an overseas team.

"We're very happy and we wish him all the best," Madumo proudly added.
