The 20-year-old has been on a meteoric rise in recent months. The Stellenbosch native helped South Africa win their first-ever U20 Africa Cup of Nations title, earning Player of the Tournament honours in the process, and has now secured a move to one of London’s most storied clubs.
While he is initially set to feature for QPR’s development side, Smith will be eyeing promotion to the first team during the 2025/26 season. If he succeeds, he’ll become the latest South African to feature in England’s second division.
He follows in the footsteps of Lyle Foster, who played in the Championship as recently as last season. The Bafana Bafana forward featured for Burnley, making 39 league appearances across two campaigns. Despite struggling with injuries, Foster played a key role in the Clarets' promotion to the Premier League.
The South African with the most appearances in the Championship, however, is Kagisho Dikgacoi. The midfield enforcer turned out 79 times for Crystal Palace and a further 25 times for Cardiff City.

Like Foster, Dikgacoi also went on to play in the Premier League – a milestone Smith will undoubtedly be hoping to reach during his stint in England.
