On July 27, Kaizer Chiefs Legends faced off against Bloemfontein Celtic Legends in the curtain-raiser for the Toyota Cup match between Chiefs and Yanga SC.
Among the players, 39-year-old Siphiwe "Shabba" Tshabalala stood out, leading many fans to wonder if the iconic star could still play professionally, despite having just played three matches in the last five years.
Shabba had last played a competitive match three years ago, which for AmaZulu FC in the PSL.

Now, former Amakhosi defender Thabang Rooi holds a different view when compared to the fans who believe the legend 'still has it'. In an exclusive interview with Soccer Laduma, Rooi expressed his belief that Tshabalala may not be able to match the current fitness standards in professional football.
"Eish, I don't know about his fitness and if he still plays competitively with young players. I am saying this because with the current players, things have changed, and I don't know if he can adapt or match them with fitness as well as speed. He can still have the skills but what about fitness and endurance to play at the highest level? For these reasons I don't think he can play professionally again," Rooi told the Siya crew.

Rooi further emphasized the importance of realism to fans, noting that while supporters may hope for Tshabalala's return, the demands of professional football are rigorous.
"Of course, we know skill doesn't stop when you retire as you are always with it but there is a lot that goes into being a professional player. It comes with a lot of pressure and look at what is happening at Chiefs now! That could put him under pressure which could be a bit tough for him this time around. So, I don't think he can make it this time around," Rooi concluded.
While Tshabalala's performance in the legends match showcased his enduring skill and class which one might say is permanent, the realities of professional football, including fitness, speed, and endurance, present significant challenges for a potential comeback for any player. Though, these doubts belong to Rooi, as most importantly it's up to Tshabalala what he believes of his own current capabilities and fitness levels.
