PSL Coaching Merry-Go-Round In Full Swing!

Just over 10 rounds of Premiership action has been played and the PSL coaching merry-go-round is in full swing. In light of this, the Siya crew looks at the changes that have taken place as well as the potential moves that could materialise.

Mamelodi Sundowns

Apart from the departure of assistant coach Steve Komphela and the appointment of Michael Loftman, the defending champions' coaching situation has been solid with coach Rulani Mokwena securely at the helm. History suggests that Sundowns not only want positive results – but they have a specific way in which they want to win matches, a box that the 36-year-old coach is comfortably ticking at the moment.

Kaizer Chiefs

Perhaps the biggest guess at the moment is who Chiefs' next coach will be. Molefi Ntseki lasted just four months and four appointments prior to him lasted for just one season. Chiefs are in need of a coach and have been linked with a number of coaches including Pitso Mosimane, Nasreddine Nabi and Muhsin Ertugral. Cavin Johnson, who has been appointed interim coach will be hoping to make a statement in his time in charge.

Orlando Pirates

With three trophies in two seasons, Jose Riveiro's job remains safe despite the mixed results in recent times, which has seen the Buccaneers get knocked out of the CAF Champions League and the Carling Knockout. The fans' full focus is on the league and it remains to be seen if the Spanish coach can dethrone Sundowns.

SuperSport United

Gavin Hunt has disappointingly been knocked out of two cup competitions so far this season; however, his side's league form has been positive. In his second stint in charge, Hunt has led Matsatsantsa to a third-place finish in the 2022/23 season, while they find themselves in second place behind Mamelodi Sundowns at this point in the season.

Polokwane City

At the start of the campaign, the club appointed nomadic Lehlohonolo Seema as a replacement for Duncan Lechesa, who led the side to promotion last season. The move has proved to be a masterstroke from the club's management. Rise and Shine have put on some impressive performances this season and are punching above their weight.

Chippa United

The charistmatic Morgan Mammila is at the helm and has been there for the last five months, which is more than can be said for some of his counterparts. In true Chippa style, they bolstered their technical team with Vusumuzi Vilakazi, who currently serves as the club's technical director though Mammila has referred to him as an assistant coach.

Stellenbosch FC

Clearly satisfied with their head coach of the last six years, Stellenbosch have placed their faith in coach Steve Barker who has been outstanding for the Cape winelands outfit. The club recently rewarded his fine performances with a new contract, keeping him committed to Stellies until 2026. With a semi-final berth in the Carling Knockout, Barker and his youthful side will be hoping to break their trophy duck.

Sekhukhune United

As reported by the Siya crew, Babina Noko have parted ways with coach Brandon Truter, though the club are yet to confirm the move. He follows in the footsteps of Morgan Gould and Johan Absolon who departed the club just days before. Ernst Middendorp's presence at their most recent game has raised eyebrows, while the club has also been linked to TS Galaxy's Sead Ramovic.

Richards Bay FC

The Siya crew has reported that Kaitano Tembo is skating on thin ice at the Natal Rich Boys. His Carling Knockout win over Orlando Pirates could have bought him crucial breathing room but Brandon Truter's presence at their match against Stellenbosch on Tuesday suggested that a change could happen sooner rather than later at the KZN outfit.

Lamontville Golden Arrows

In the wake of coach Vusumuzi Vilakazi's shock departure, Golden Arrows have started the season like a house on fire under Mabhuti Khenyeza. Having managed to get the right blend of youth and experience, the former striker appears to have struck a chord with his Abafana Be'sthende players and looks certain in his job.

AmaZulu

In February this year AmaZulu confirmed that then coach Romain Folz had signed a 3-year contract extension from 1 July 2023 to 30 June 2026. Two months later and Usuthu announced that Folz would serve as a technical advisor before he was let go. Ayanda Dlamini was brought in as an interim coach. Two months later and AmaZulu appointed Spaniard Pablo Franco Martin as their new head coach on a 36-month-long deal.

Cape Town Spurs

Another team without a head coach. This is after Shaun Bartlett was relieved of his duties three months after signing a new two-year contract with the club having promoted them from the Motsepe Foundation Championship. However, a torrid start to the season saw the two parties go their separate ways. Vasili Manousakis (assistant coach) and Sean Connor (Technical Director) have been roped in to steady the ship.

TS Galaxy

Coach Sead Ramovic has been tipped by Bernard Parker to coach any of the country's 'big three' teams if given the opportunity. The UEFA Pro license holder has been in charge of the Rockets for the past two years having joined in 2021 and looks to have matters under control at the club.

Moroka Swallows

In March this year, Ernst Middendorp parted ways with the Dube Birds and Musa Nyatama was appointed his successor, albeit on an interim basis. Names were flying high and wide over who would be the next Swallows coach; and it came as a surprise when they announced the capture of Steve Komphela into the Birds' nest. Currently sitting in sixth place on the log standings, that has been a solid start for the former Sundowns man at the helm.

Royal AM

Given the controversy surrounding the club, John Maduka has done well under the circumstances with the club currently slapped with a transfer window ban over their case with Samir Nurkovic. Dan Malesela was in charge and before him Kabo Zondo; but Royal AM have gone back to the tried and tested Malawian.

Cape Town City

Eric Tinkler's second coming at the club has lasted longer than his first in 2016. The coach has managed to navigate the ever-changing landscape that is the PSL and has shown his quality although by his own admission his club has been slow starters. City currently find themselves in a stable fourth place on the Premiership and would want to maintain their status as 'disruptors' of their more fancied Gauteng counterparts.
