Radebe: How Much I Was Earning At Leeds

Leeds legend Lucas Radebe

With salary exploitation understood to still be pressing point in the PSL, legend Lucas Radebe has revealed how the matter can be solved, from his own experience at Leeds United.

There has been reports that there are players in the PSL still earning salaries below and just over R5000.

Recently, after the PSL Dispute Resolution Chamber (DRC) ruled in favour of six Royal AM players released to join other clubs, amidst the KwaZulu-Natal outfit's financial crisis.

It was revealed that Sabelo Radebe, who got his clearance to join Golden Arrows, earned a gross salary of R9000 at Thwihli Thwahla.

Radebe has revealed that after he joined Leeds United in 1994, alongside the late Phil 'Chippa' Masinga, they were paid peanuts by The Whites but the Premier League intervened.

"I didn't understand contract staff, numbers and all that. I went there and they were talking about work permits. So apparently, we were the lowest paid players in the Premier League, because where we come from we're unknown," Radebe revealed on izinja zeGame podcast with Josta Dladla.

"So the Premier League intervened, to say, 'If you buy these two players and they become part of you, they can't earn... it's exploitation', especially we're from Africa.

"(I was getting) £5 000, imagine that was the lowest, per week and players there were earning a lot of money but we didn't know or understand. I think maybe (Leeds) spoke (to our negotiators) and said 'just agree'. But I think their reason was (that) they were not sure if we're going to make it in that league," the former Kaizer Chiefs defender added.

Radebe could not immediately settle in his first few years at Leeds but once he cemented a place, he eventually was made captain of the side, where he inspired them to higher positions in the league and qualification into the UEFA Cup.
