Shalulile Stars As Sundowns Restore 6-Point Lead Over Bucs

PRETORIA, SOUTH AFRICA - FEBRUARY 02:

Peter Shalulile came off the bench to play a starring role as Mamelodi Sundowns defeated Golden Arrows 4-0 in Betway Premiership action on Sunday evening.

Result: Mamelodi Sundowns 4-0 Golden Arrows

Date: 02 February 2025

Venue: Lucas Moripe Stadium

Sundowns brought back their regulars who were rested in the Nedbank Cup win over Sibanye Golden Stars, as the likes of Iqraam Rayners, Lucas Ribeiro Costa, Marcelo Allende and Teboho Mokoena were recalled.

The game got off to a bright start, with Arrows pressing Masandawana high and both sides created early chances but could not capitalize.

The Brazilians, however, could not get the likes of Rayners into the game, with Arrows threatening on transitions.

Miguel Cardoso's charges started to gain momentum going forward after the half-hour mark but the Portuguese coach was forced to make a change after Sphelele Mkhulise got injured and he was replaced by Peter Shalulile.

Shalulile made an immediate impression, as he drew a penalty for Sundowns for a foul in the box. Costa made no mistake from the spot-kick on the stroke of half-time, as he fired Masandawana ahead.

The Brazilians looked more in control coming from the break as Aubrey Modiba came close early in the second stanza.

As the hosts remained on the front foot, Shalulile eventually gave them a two-goal cushion on 65 minutes with an acrobatic finish in the box.

Masandawana made a tactical change midway into the second stanza as Jayden Adams replaced Rayners.

Masandawana had complete control of the game and with ten minutes to go Shalulile put the result beyond doubt and completed his brace with a tap-in after he was unselfishly setup by Costa.

Sundowns ran riot with five minutes to go as Mokoena made it 4-0 with a long-range strike.

The Tshwane giants extended their lead at the top of the standings to six points ahead of second-placed Orlando Pirates, although they have played an extra game.
