Why Ribeiro Deserves Player Of The Season

Lucas Ribeiro Costa is a frontrunner for Player of the Season award.

With Lucas Ribeiro Costa a prominent figure in Mamelodi Sundowns’ success so far this season, the Brazilian attacker is being touted as the favourite to capture the Player of the Season award.

The 26-year-old has enjoyed yet another stellar season in the South African top flight. This weekend, the attacker will feature in the CAF Champions League final, as he hopes to add continental silverware to his growing list of accolades with Ka Bo Yellow.

He will be hoping to add to his two goals and one assist against Pyramids FC. However, it is not on the continent where he has done his best work — instead, it has been in the Betway Premiership where he has shone.

According to Transfermarkt, in the 26 top-flight matches that the Santa Helena native has played in the league, the forward has scored 16 goals and provided nine assists. This has led many at Mamelodi Sundowns to vouch for him to claim the big individual honour at the end of the season.

One of them is his coach, Miguel Cardoso, who, after their first league win over Chippa United, advocated for the forward to win the award.

"A player like Lucas is clearly the player of the league this season, that has expressed himself not only this year but has been [consistent] but this year he exploded,” Cardoso said.

“He just brings good things, the question is that sometimes people look at a player and I'm not speaking about today, they look at a player or a team and they expect a goal after goal after goal and they don't relate to the level that he promotes to the other ones.”
