Mabasa: I Want To Achieve That Record Before AFCON

Orlando Pirates striker Tshegofatso Mabasa has set himself a task of achieving a target by December this year, that will put him in the club's history books.

Mabasa heads into the 2025/26 season with a big chance of becoming Pirates' all-time top scorer and he has set his sights on achieving this feat before the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco at the end of this year.

It's a bold statement to make, but Mabasa is not the type of player who is worried about the pressure that comes with revealing goals to the public. Bucs legend Benedict Vilakazi holds the record with 58 goals for the club and Mabasa is currently on 47.

"I am looking to have a big season, this season. I think I am 10 or 11 goals away. I want to achieve that record before AFCON starts. In August, we have five games, six with the MTN8, so I don't see why not," Mabasa told media.

"The older I get, the less I worry about pressure. I no longer worry about pressure. You can't perform well with pressure."

Pirates welcomed new faces before their pre-season tour of Spain and Mabasa has been impressed with what he's seen from them.

"I think the trip to Spain gave us an opportunity to integrate them, away from all the noise in the country. For us to be away worked quite well because you can see how they performed even in the friendly games. You look at Mbule, for example, his performances in the friendly games. You look at Appollis as well. Now it's just for them to come back home and do it here. We believe in them and they have our support," Mabasa said.
