With Siyanda Xulu nearing the end of his contract with Maritzburg United, the experienced defender is again linked with Orlando Pirates.
Xulu is facing uncertain future with Maritzburg as his contract at the KwaZulu-Natal club is nearing an end.
Indications are that the defender would be heading out the exit door at the Team of Choice at the end of the season, as previously reported by the Siya crew.
Xulu's deal with the Pietermaritzburg club will come to an end on June 30, and while it is believed that the former Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns player is eyeing a return to Europe, an overseas move could be on hold given the current circumstances around the world due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Reports in local media have linked the 28-year-old centre-back with Pirates, and according to former Chiefs midfielder Junior Khanye, Xulu would be a good signing for the Buccaneers.
"I had an opportunity to train with Siyanda Xulu in Chloorkop when I was there together with the late Scara Ngobese, though we unfortunately didn't sign with Sundowns. He (Xulu) was already showing signs of a top player and I could tell he was quality," said former SA U23 star Junior Khanye.
"Siyanda Xulu would be a good signing for Orlando Pirates, because firstly, the boy is comfortable on the ball. Secondly, the boy is vocal. Pirates have been conceding so many goals via their centre-backs. Okay, Siyanda isn't the tallest of players but he is tall enough for his position – a defender. He's player with good timing. As a footballer when the ball is up in the air it is not always about the height, but the timing at times. Tso (Benedict Vilakazi) is short but he was scoring headers against teams with tall players and that's the timing I'm talking about," Khanye added.
"Siyanda is a good defender and I like the technique he uses in heading the ball with his forehead. Defending is not always about kicking the ball to the stands. Sometimes you try and kick the ball and it spins and come back exactly where it was kicked from and cause problems. Technically, he is very good and he is a good passer of the ball. Pirates need Siyanda to marshall their defence. Another thing I like about him is that he was properly developed," the Daveyton-born player concluded.
