Chiefs' Double Over Pirates Still Haunts Riveiro

Chiefs' Double Over Pirates Still Haunts Riveiro

Orlando Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro has revealed whether beating Kaizer Chiefs in the Nedbank Cup makes up for the six points they lost to them in the league.

Chiefs completed a league double over Pirates in the league this season, as they extended their winning streak over their Soweto rivals to five matches in the DStv Premiership.

However, Amakhosi were humbled over the weekend, as the Buccaneers edged them 2-1 in the Nedbank Cup semi-finals in extra-time and qualified for the final at their expense.

Riveiro was asked if knocking out Chiefs in the Nedbank Cup makes up for the two losses in the league and says he would have loved those six points.

"I really would have liked to have those six points in our pocket, it was tough losing those games, so definitely and obviously at the end of the season we will see if we really needed those points or not," Riveiro said in a press conference.

Pirates, who are second on the table, are just two points ahead of third-placed SuperSport United with two matches to go.

And Riveiro went on and said that it will be clearer at the end of the season if they needed those points against Amakhosi and he's just happy that they are progressing.

"But if we get those points in that moment probably the scenario would be different, it's only about speculation. The important thing is that we feel we're progressing, we cannot play in a very good level every single game," he said.

"(In the Nedbank Cup game) we did well in some moments, in other moments Chiefs was better but we still managed to be competitive, it's the most important thing that when you're not even at your best, you are suffering and still make it difficult for the opponent, we're not an easy team to play against."

The 'Spanish guitar' reiterated that he sees progress in his team and everybody can see that as well.

"Every week we try to do things little by little better and I think there's never been a problem in between understanding or not in what we need to do. But games are games, I'm happy we move and the progression is easy to see," he added.
