With Abdeslam Ouaddou expected to officially begin his duties as Orlando Pirates head coach at the end of the week, club legend Benedict ‘Tso’ Vilakazi has shared his thoughts on the appointment – raising eyebrows while calling for patience and support.
Vilakazi, known for his no-nonsense approach both on and off the pitch, admitted he has reservations about whether Ouaddou is the right man to take the Soweto giants forward.

“To be honest, I’m not entirely convinced that he’s the coach who can elevate Pirates to the next level,” said Vilakazi, speaking exclusively to the Siya crew.
“I’m not questioning his credentials or ability, he’s clearly shown promise, and we’ve seen some of his work during his time at Marumo Gallants. But this is Orlando Pirates, and the pressure here is completely different. This is a club with massive expectations, where every decision is scrutinised, and the demand for results is constant,” he said.
The former Bucs midfield maestro continued: “His appointment raises some questions for me. I don’t think he has faced the kind of pressure he’s about to experience now. At Pirates, you’re not just managing a team – you’re managing a brand, a legacy, and a fanbase that expects silverware every season. That kind of responsibility requires a coach with vast experience, strong leadership, and the ability to handle complex dynamics in the dressing room, especially when dealing with players who are regulars in their national teams.”

Despite his scepticism, Vilakazi struck a note of support and unity: “That said, we have to give him a fair chance, just like other coaches who came before him. We can only judge his impact over time. For now, all we can do is support him. Coaching a club of Pirates’ stature is no child’s play – it takes more than just tactics. It requires full support from management, the players, and especially the supporters. I truly wish him all the best because he will need all the backing he can get,” concluded the Bucs all-time top goalscorer.
Earlier this week, the Buccaneers officially confirmed Ouaddou’s appointment as head coach, taking over from Jose Riveiro, who stepped down to join Egyptian giants Al Ahly after a successful three-year tenure at the club.
