Pirates Take Aim At New Bafana Defender

Pirates Take Aim At New Bafana Defender

HAMMARSDALE, SOUTH AFRICA - MAY 03: Thabo Moloisane of Stellenbosch FC celebrates scoring during the Betway Premiership match between Golden Arrows and Stellenbosch FC

A Soweto giant appears to be one of the busiest clubs in the transfer market so far, with reports suggesting they are targeting multiple players across different positions as they prepare for continental competition.

Few days after it was reported that Orlando Pirates had signed midfielder Sihle Nduli from Stellenbosch FC, sources close to the club have indicated that the Buccaneers are in advanced talks with Stellies concerning one of their defenders.

Insiders privy to reliable information have added that it's believed that Pirates are close to sealing the deal for new Bafana Bafana defender Thabo Moloisane who had an outstanding season.

"It's believed that talks and negotiations are at an advanced stage. Pirates are really interested in beefing up their central defence and the good thing is Thabo (Moloisane) can also play at right back and they like his versatility. If all goes well then the deal could be concluded after the Bafana Bafana international friendlies against Tanzania and Mozambique," the source told Soccer Laduma.

Meanwhile, a second insider stated that Bucs would be working on releasing defenders too.

"It's a process. They are looking at different options. Mind you, they will be playing in the CAF Champions League again this coming season and they will need a well-balanced squad. But at the same time, apparently they could be looking at releasing some defenders who the technical team would feel are not first team players when the season opening approaches. That's how they are looking at things," the second insider told the Siya crew.

The former Mamelodi Sundowns junior player joined Stellenbosch FC two seasons ago from the then relegated Maritzburg United. In his first season, he featured in nearly all the league games, and in this just ended season he starred once again.

The 26-year-old is currently part of the 23-member Bafana Bafana squad in camp for two friendly games against Tanzania and Mozambique.

Soccer Laduma contacted Stellenbosch FC and Pirates for comment but there was no response at the time of publishing this story.

With Pirates prioritising defensive reinforcements ahead of their next CAF Champions League campaign, the potential acquisition of Moloisane would bring both versatility and international experience to their backline.

As the Sea Robbers continue their squad overhaul, supporters will be watching closely to see which current defenders might make way should the Stellies star complete his move to Orlando.
