Riveiro Responds To Big Saleng Question At Pirates

Riveiro Responds To Big Saleng Question At Pirates

Monnapule Saleng of Orlando Pirates challenges Yahya Attiat Fathom Ghallab of Al Ahly during the CAF Champions League 2024/25 match between Orlando Pirates and Al Ahly on 07 December 2024 at Orlando Stadium in Soweto

Orlando Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro has answered a question on Monnapule Saleng's situation, although he remains tight-lipped on the exact details.

Saleng, a key figure for the Buccaneers, has been a surprising absentee from the matchday squads since last year.

The 26-year-old winger has not played in an official match for over two months, leaving the supporters questioning his absence.

Despite growing speculation, Pirates have only provided a brief update in January, describing his absence as temporary but offering no further explanation.

Supporters have been eager for clarity, especially given Saleng's impressive contributions earlier in the season.

The talented winger has made just 13 appearances across all competitions in this campaign, scoring five goals and registering one assist.

By his usual high standards, these numbers could have been significantly better had he been playing regularly.

The former Players' Player of the Season in Mzansi played a crucial role in helping Bucs secure their third consecutive MTN8 title but has since found himself sidelined for unclear reasons.

During the Nedbank Cup media day in Sandton, Johannesburg, on Thursday, Riveiro was asked about Saleng's situation, however, the Spaniard declined to disclose any specific details about the winger's absence.

"I don't speak about the health of my players, it's something that belongs to a private space. And the moment that the club feels that it's the time to speak about which players are injured, how long they are going to take, and which moment of the process (of recovery) they are in, they will do it. It's not part of my job description, (and) it's not an ethical thing. I know that it will be nice to know how close Olisa (Ndah) or (Goodman) Mosele is and what's happening with Saleng but it's not going to happen," said the coach, as he also answered about the progress of the two players returning from injury.

Riveiro's refusal to elaborate has only fuelled speculation, leaving fans in the dark about when – or if – Saleng will return to the pitch any time soon.

As Pirates continue their campaign, the mystery surrounding the Bloemhof-born player remains unresolved, and supporters will be hoping for an update in the coming weeks.
