Orlando Pirates have made one of their best starts to a season in years, already clinching the MTN8 trophy and performing impressively in the Premiership and reaching the group stage of the CAF Champions League.

Former Pirates midfielder Solomon 'Dolly' Mathe believes the Houghton-based side is on the right track and capable of surpassing their achievements of the past two seasons.

Speaking exclusively to the Soccer Laduma, the Vanderbijlpark-based former midfielder credited the team's success to smart recruitment and promoting young talent, which has strengthened the squad.

"You have seen that the way they have started. It shows that they are on the right track. Pirates haven't done this for a long time where they are doing well on all fronts. I think the technical team and management are working well together and that's why the results are coming together," Mathe told the Siya crew.

"This is because the recruitment is good and the promotion of young players is also working for the team. That's why I am saying they are on the right track this season."

Mathe is also confident that the Buccaneers can compete for both the Premiership title and the CAF Champions League.

"They have a well balance squad. You have seen how they have played in Africa as well as at home. The way they win games this season is different from how they have been doing in the past few season.

"The players look hungry for more and that's the spirit which can help them fight for both the league and the Champions League. I believe that they have a well balanced squad to conquer Africa this season. They are doing very well for the team and themselves," Mathe added.
