Orlando Pirates legend Lucky Lekgwathi has shared his thoughts on the exits of club captain Innocent Maela and midfield general Miguel Timm, following confirmation that both players will be leaving the Soweto giants at the end of June.
The Buccaneers recently announced that Maela and Timm are among the players whose contracts will not be renewed ahead of the 2025/26 season.

Their impending departures mark the end of important chapters for the two experienced campaigners at the Houghton-based side.
Speaking exclusively to the Siya crew, Lekgwathi – who himself is a revered former Pirates skipper, praised the pair for the roles they played in the club’s recent success and the example they set for younger players.
“For me, I think it was a good decision, as I believe that both guys played their part and contributed to the team over the years. Players come and go, and the club had to make a decision,” said Lekgwathi.
“I believe both guys played a big role in the club’s progress, and they deserve a pat on the back for their contribution. You know, with some players, if they were regulars and played a big part when the club won trophies, they tend to complain when they are no longer playing as regularly, but with Maela and Timm, I don’t remember that ever happening.”
Throughout their time with the club, Maela and Timm have been admired for their leadership qualities and commitment to the badge.
While neither were guaranteed starters in the past campaign, Lekgwathi believes their professionalism never wavered.
“The guys remained professional, and they led by example. They were good examples to the young players in the team. I am sure even the chairman was happy with the guys for the role they played in the team during their time. I am so proud of them, and I just want to wish them good luck going forward,” added Lekgwathi.

Looking ahead, the retired defender believes both Maela, 32, and Timm, 33, still have plenty to offer in the game.
“They still have age on their side, and they can still play if they wish. Age is just a number, and I remember that in my late 30s I was still playing, and I was scoring crucial goals for the team, and I believe they can also do it with their experience,” concluded Lekgwathi.
