Lekoelea: If I Was Playing With Mofokeng…

Orlando Pirates legend Steve Lekoelea has revealed a special bond he has with teenage forward Relebohile Mofokeng.

Mofokeng has emerged as one of the leading young players in the country for Pirates after his first full season with the Buccaneers last season, where he was linked with an overseas move.

Within the first few months last term, the 19-year-old had already been invited to an assessment by English Premier League club Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Despite the transfer not immediately going through, 'Rele' continued his form for the Soweto giants and ended the season on a high, after his individual brilliance won Pirates Nedbank Cup following his winner against Mamelodi Sundowns in the final.

The Sharpeville native appears to have even upped his game in the early stages of the season with his showing for Ezimnyama in the MTN8 after they booked their spot in the final and got supporters excited in Bafana Bafana shirt after a late appearance against Uganda, where he changed the complexion of the game.

Lekoelea, one of the greats to don the Pirates jersey, has put his stamp of approval on Mofokeng.

"Rele is my favourite player at Pirates. I wish they could have ten Relebohile Mofekengs on the field and one goalkeeper, the way he's so clever," Lekoelea told Soccer Laduma.

"If I was playing with Mofokeng, we would skin people, we would make a double impact," he said.

'Chippa' also revealed that Mofokeng, making it at the Buccaneers at his age, is an inspiration to his son Omolemo, 17, who has attracted interest from one of the big teams.

"It encourages him [Omolemo] too much. Young players want to see themselves there, even though he may not be there at the same age of 19, he can make it at around 20, 21. There's a lot of opportunities now with the Diski Challenge, players have a chance to prove themselves," he said.

There are suggestions from supporters that Mofokeng is so good, he should already be playing in Europe and when asked if the 19-year-old is ready, Lekoelea couldn't agree more.

"He could be ready by tomorrow but in football you never know how quickly he will adjust," 'Chippa' added.
