MTN8 Report: AmaZulu v Cape Town City 15 August 2021

Cape Town City secured passage to semi-finals of the MTN8 with a 2-1 over AmaZulu at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Sunday evening.

MTN8

Result: AmaZulu 1-2 Cape Town City

Date: 15 August 2021

Venue: Moses Mabhida Stadium

Philani Zulu and Keagan Buchanan were handed their Usuthu debuts while the Citizens also named two new signings from the start in Angolan goalkeeper Hugo Marques and Khanyisa Mayo.

City had a bright start as Mduduzi Mdantsane had a chance to give them the lead in the eighth minute with a strike inside the box from Mpho Makola's cross but his effort was saved by goalkeeper Veli Mothwa.

The visitors eventually opened the scoring two minutes later courtesy of a low strike from Terrence Mashego after a through ball by Abbubaker Mobara.

Benni McCarthy's charges were fired up to get back into the game but they lacked the cutting edge in the final third to unlock the Citizens' deep block.

Siyethemba Sithebe had a chance to equalise for AmaZulu on the stroke of half-time after a through ball by Luvuyo Memela just outside the box but he curled his strike over the bar.

However, Lehlohonolo Majoro eventually levelled matters for Usuthu nine minutes from the half-time break with a low strike inside the box against his former employers.

Both sides were forced into changes around the hour-mark, as Makola succumbed to cramps and was replaced by Thabo Nodada while Buchanan was replaced by debutant Tshepang Moremi.

The match was there for the taking in the latter stages but Usuthu suffered a blow in the last 18 minutes after Augustine Mulenga could not continue due to injury and made way for new signing Kgotso Moleko.

With extra-time looming, Mdantsane snatched the winner for the visitors in the last minute with a neat finish into the bottom corner to send City into the semi-finals.
