Motsepe Foundation Championship: Baroka off to losing start

Friday, 02 September
MM Platinum 2-0 JDR Stars

New boys MM Platinum started their tenure in the Motsepe Foundation Championship positively in a 2-0 win over JDR Stars at the Wits Football Stadium on Friday.

There were no goals during the course of the first half, but the newbies also known as La Masia struck twice in the second period through Augustine Mahlonoko and Yusuf Jappie.

Platinum City Rovers 0-1 All Stars FC

All Stars FC also made a winning start to their campaign with a late 1-0 win over Platinum City Rovers at the Olen Park Stadium in Potchefstroom.

All Stars, who used to play in the Western Cape province, have since relocated to the Gauteng province and saw substitute Menzi Ndwandwe bag the winner late in the match.

Pretoria Callies 1-1 Cape Town Spurs

Pretoria Callies and Cape Town Spurs cancelled out each other with a 1-1 draw to get their season up and running at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville.

After a disappointing season where they battled against the drop much of the time, Callies made the opening inside 15 minutes before Ashley Cupido rescued the visitors.

Magesi FC 1-0 Venda Football Academy

Fellow newbies Magesi FC made a dream start to their season in the second tier of South African football after seeing off Venda Football Academy 1-0.

The host secured passage to the Championship on the back of their success in the ABC Motsepe Promotional Play-offs last season, whilst Venda are now on the back-foot following this defeat.

Black Leopards 0-1 Hungry Lions

Hungry Lions made a winning start to their second season in the Championship as a first half effort ensured a 1-0 win over Black Leopards at a packed Malamule Stadium.

Lidoda Duvha, who didn't have a good campaign last term, succumbed to a solitary finish in the first spell from Tshepo Mohlala and watched Di Tau secure victory.

Sunday, 04 September
University of Pretoria 0-0 Polokwane City

University of Pretoria, who missed out on promotion through the Promotional Play-offs last season were held to a goalless draw against Polokwane City on Sunday.

It is certainly not the start AmaTuks had wanted, as Rise and Shine who filtered with a Promotional Play-off spot the better part of last season now need to get the ball rolling in their next assignment.

Baroka FC 1-2 Uthongathi FC

Baroka FC's life away from the DStv Premiership started disappointingly following a 2-1 loss to Uthongathi FC at the Global Stadium.

Bakgaga Ba Ga Mphahlele, who were relegated from the DStv Premiership last season, were off the mark through an early penalty from Sifundo Dlamini.

The Cane Cutters hit back following the set-back through Mfanafuthi Mkhize before Bayzel Goldstone doubled their tally that ultimately earned them an opening day victory.

Casric Stars FC 2-0 Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila FC

Casric Stars FC started their campaign after purchasing the status of Free State Stars strongly following a 2-0 victory over Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila FC.

The goals from the debutants came in either half and now see Tshakhuma head back to the drawing board to get their campaign back on track.
