The relegation of Cape Town Spurs had much to do with the club not valuing experience players like Mamelodi Sundowns do with Themba Zwane, according to former club midfielder Brent Carelse.
Spurs struggled to stay in the Betway Premiership for more than a season, after they suffering an automatic relegation during the 2023/24 campaign after finishing bottom of the standings.

With most of the Urban Warriors players in demand from Premiership clubs, such as Ashley Cupido, Asanele Velebayi, Cumani Butsaka, Soccer Laduma spoke to former Ajax Cape Town star Carelse about what the club got wrong.
"It's a difficult one, you know. It probably started at the beginning of the season, because I think they didn't sign new players. A lot of teams got promoted and went back to the NFD [after a season in the PSL]. I think that's possibly the biggest problem, is that they don't sign new players for the league," Carelse told Soccer Laduma.
"You need experience in the PSL. Look at Zwane, he's 35, he still plays for the national team. There's a lot of players like him but once they reach that age, the clubs think, 'Ah they are old'.
"Cape Town Spurs should have signed three, four players that had PSL experience, so they could help those young boys flourish. Because at Ajax [during our time], yes, there were a lot of youngsters but not all of them at the same time. There was a lot of experience around us," Carelse said.
"When I was young there were the likes of Edelbert Dinha, Duran Francis, players like that. You learn from such players."

The former Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder went on and said he also felt the decision to relieve Shaun Bartlett of his duties early in the season played it's role in their relegation.
"Also letting go of the coach [Shaun Bartlett] early, knowing very well that the coach's hands were tied. Like I'm saying to you, where are the [experienced] players?" Carelse asked.
