In an emotional address as seen on Sundowns TV, Motsepe admitted that the result was a bitter pill to swallow after a long and promising journey. Sundowns lost 2-1 (3-2 on aggregate) to Pyramids in a tightly contested clash that brought an end to their continental dream for the season.
“Today was a very difficult game for the club. Nobody ever wants to lose a final. There are no excuses. We’re all hurting. We didn’t envision this ending,” said Motsepe.
The Sundowns chairman acknowledged the quality of the opposition and gave credit to the Egyptian outfit.
“Pyramids deserved to beat us today. They played better, stopped us from playing our game, and we must acknowledge that. Their coach, players, and supporters deserve credit,” he added.
Despite the defeat, Motsepe called on Masandawana supporters to remain loyal and optimistic, especially with the FIFA Club World Cup on the horizon.
“There’s still something to look forward to. We must be sad for a moment, but let’s not forget who we are. We’ve won our eighth league title in a row, our 15th in history. We are growing.
“We touched the sky. This wasn’t our moment, but setbacks lead to comebacks. We will learn from this and be better. The sun will rise again for Mamelodi Sundowns,” he concluded.
