What Basadien, Downs Signing Means For Bafana

Mamelodi Sundowns' signing of Fawaaz Basadien could compromise Bafana Bafana and head coach Hugo Broos.

Sundowns have been criticised for it's competitiveness, by signing almost all quality players, who emerge from other PSL teams.

It appears the signing of Basadien from Stellenbosch could make Broos to choose between the former and Aubrey Modiba for a left-back position, which they will fight for at the Brazilians, along with Divine Lunga.

The former Stellies left-back has made a big impression at Bafana, after he was recently made captain in an international friendly against Tanzania, where Masandawana players were excluded due to their participation at the FIFA Club World Cup.

Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso at times played Modiba in midfield, as he prefers Lunga at left-back and those dynamics at Masandawana could see either the former SuperSport United utility player or Basadien missing out at Bafana.

"That's why I say sometimes Cardoso doesn't know how to use Sundowns players, when you talk about Modiba, you're talking about a Bafana Bafana left-back, it's him and Basadien competing for that position," former Orlando Pirates and Sundowns midfielder Benedict 'Tso' Vilakazi said on omniaudioafrica YouTube Channel.

"So now I saw even at the Club World Cup, Modiba was not really prioritized in that position but anyway Lunga did very well. I thought Lunga at Club World Cup will be suspect but he did very well. It's going to be a strong competition in that left back, Lunga, Modiba, Basadien, they'll have to fight for that spot," Vilakazi said.

Broos could be heavily criticized if he selects two left-backs from the same team - at Sundowns, should one not be a regular.

The other left-back at Masandawana, Terrence Mashego, who is another player who is in the Bafana Bafana setup, but will also not get an opportunity to fight for a spot in the national team.

Interestingly, both Modiba and Mashego were selected by the Belgian in the previous Africa Cup of Nations squad.
