They have developed somewhat of a rivalry in recent years - but Al Ahly could potentially do Mamelodi Sundowns a massive favour by qualifying for the CAF Champions League final.

Sundowns' FIFA Club World Cup fate could potentially lie in the hands of their Egyptian counterparts.

The Brazilians would have qualified for the lucrative showpiece had ASEC Mimosas managed to overcome Esperance in the CAF Champions League quarter finals; however, it was the Tunisian giants that managed to advance to the competition's last four, which provided a major boost in their quest for Club World Cup football.

Now, semi-final opponents Esperance and Sundowns will wait with bated breath for the Al Ahly and TP Mazembe clash to determine who advances to the Club World Cup.

Both Al Ahly and Wydad Casablanca have already qualified for the 2025 Club World Cup, which will be staged in the USA, taking up a similar 32-team format to that of the FIFA World Cup.

Three teams in TP Mazembe, Sundowns and Esperance are vying for Africa's remaining two slots.

This maeans that should Al Ahly manage to overcome Mazembe in the semi-finals, Esperance and Sundowns will qualify thanks to a superior points tally behind Al Ahly and Wydad.

As things stand, Sundowns are in third place with 98 points, while Esperance are eight points behind on 90.

Mazembe would have to win this year's Champions League if they are to qualify for the tournament, which would see Sundowns qualify as the fourth-best team in the competition.

The first legs of the semi-finals of the CAF Champions League kicks off on 19 and 20 April.
