Downs Can Still Break Record, But...

Mamelodi Sundowns are still on course to break their own record of 71 points in a season, but there is little room for error in their final four matches of the campaign.

With the title already wrapped up, the DStv Premiership champions still have something to play for in the league. Currently on 62 points, Sundowns need 10 points in their last four matches to beat the record they set in 2015/16 under the tutelage of Pitso Mosimane, who went on to win the CAF Champions League a few months later.

Sundowns are in a similar situation now, with the possibility of breaking that record and going all the way in the Champions League, as they are currently in the quarterfinals of the continental club competition.

At one stage, it looked as though they would cruise to that target, but three consecutive draws recently has now put the club in a tight situation when it comes to breaking the record.

There is little room for error in the final four matches in the league, if they want to break the record. In fact, Sundowns cannot lose any of their remaining matches. They have to win three and draw one to get to the record.

In their final four matches of the season, Sundowns are going to play Richards Bay, AmaZulu, Marumo Gallants and Maritzburg United. Of the four clubs that they have left on their schedule, Gallants have improved their form and could pose a big threat.

The three KZN clubs - Richards Bay, AmaZulu and Maritzburg, have been going through a difficult period and Sundowns could fancy their chances of collecting maximum points against these clubs to ensure they get themselves to breaking the record.
