Meet Sundowns' Fresh Face In Defence

Mamelodi Sundowns, known for their strategic player development, are set to promote a standout player from their DStv Diski Challenge (DDC) squad to the first team for the upcoming season, the Siya crew has been informed.

Soccer Laduma has learned that 20-year-old defender Malibongwe Khoza, who impressed in the development league last season, is being groomed for elevation to the senior squad.

Sources close to the club have indicated that Khoza is likely to be included in the list of players registered for the next season by the defending league champions.

"He is a very good defender. He is just 20 years old but he has the capability to play at a higher level and that's why the club are set to promote him," said the Siya source.

The expected decision comes as Sundowns finalize their preparations for their pre-season camp in Austria. The technical team, in collaboration with the DDC coaches, has recommended Khoza's inclusion, recognising his potential to contribute to the senior team.

"Right now they are finalising the team that will travel to Austria for the pre-season camp and training and they are looking at the youngsters from the DDC side to be part of the team next season whether they go to Europe or not. But the technical team is working hand in hand with the DDC technical team and they have apparently recommended that Mali (Malibongwe Khoza) to be promoted to the senior team," the source added.

According to a second insider, this move is part of Sundowns' broader strategy to bolster their defence, especially after the departure of experienced players like Kenyan star Brian Onyango and Sifiso Ngobeni, who recently joined AmaZulu FC.

"You know the team will be playing in more games than last season and they need a good number of players in each position. Actually the technical team was looking at having two or three players in each position to do that whether there is fatigue, injury or suspensions, then the team won't suffer to cover up for the players who are out and the promotion of Malibongwe (Khoza) is for that. I know he is ready for the big move," the second source stated.

Khoza's promotion is seen as a step to strengthen the team's defensive line-up and maintain its competitive edge across all fronts, including domestic and continental competitions. His readiness for top-tier football has been affirmed by insiders, who believe he can make a significant impact in the upcoming season.
