Malesela: Sundowns Are Challengeable

Malesela: Sundowns Are Challengeable

Dan Malesela, coach of Baroka during the Motsepe Foundation Championship 2023/24 match between La Masia and Baroka FC at the Tut Stadium, Pretoria on the 16 April 2024

Dan 'Dance' Malesela has made a plea about the dominance of Mamelodi Sundowns in the DStv Premiership as he aims for a return to the top-flight in the new season.

Following their successful defence of the title in the 2023/24 season, the Brazilians have now won the league a record seven times in succession.

Under Rulani Mokwena, who has since been named as the coach of Wydad Casablanca in Morocco, Downs came close to finishing the previous campaign as invincibles had it not been their loss to Cape Town City on final day.

The Chloorkop outfit is ahead of the big guns such as Kaizer Chiefs and others in being the most successful team in Mzansi in more than 50 years of professional football.

Malesela, who is a former Sundowns defender, believes that clubs should up their game in competing with the ex-African champions.

"One of my biggest ambitions is to find a club where I can be able to challenge for league honours. We need to start challenging. Other people need to start challenging. We don't need a situation where Sundowns will go for 10 years winning the league back-to-back while other people are watching. They are good and I agree about that, but I think they are challengeable.

Malesela, who is currently unattached after leaving Baroka FC during the PSL's promotion/relegation playoffs, aspires of challenging Masandawana in his next PSL job.

"If I can find a good club, I will be able to challenge them. Talking about challenging them, I mean that sometimes we need to make the league so interesting. When the difference at the top of the log is two or three points going into the last game, it makes for the league to be interesting because people don't know what's going to happen in the end. But when a team is leading by more than 10 points, no, it does not look good for our football," concluded Malesela.
