Result: Cape Town City 1-2 Kaizer Chiefs

Date: 13 August 2023

Venue: Athlone Stadium

Chiefs made two changes from their defeat against Mamelodi Sundowns, as Tebogo Potsane and Mduduzi Mdantsane were handed their first starts of the season.

The Glamour Boys had a quick start, as they threatened on transition attacks, where they were given a lot of space, looking to use the pace of the likes of Ashley Du Preez, Potsane and Pule Mmodi.

However, Amakhosi went behind on 24 minutes after Marc van Heerden headed in a cross from a corner situation that was parried away by goalkeeper Brandon Petersen but the ball was deemed to have crossed the line by the assistant referee.

The Citizens continued to play a high line and were eventually punished ten minutes before the halftime break after Du Preez raced through on goal from a pass by Mdantsane and fired a low shot between the legs of shot-stopper Darren Keet.

The game opened from end to end towards the end of the first stanza but both sides could not utilize their chances in the box and went to the half-time break level pegging.

The second stanza was balanced in the early stages, with chances hard to come by but City asked more questions of Chiefs while Molefi Ntseki's charges could not maintain their pace on transitions.

With the game on the edge, Ntseki eventually made a double attacking change in the last 20 minutes, as Ranga Chivaviro and Christian Saile replaced Potsane and Mmodi, while the Citizens also refreshed their attack ten minutes later as Jo Paciencia came on for Khanyisa Mayo while Thabo Nodada replaced Taahir Goedeman in midfield.

Chiefs had a big chance four minutes before time after Saile had a sweeping shot in the box that came off the post after an early cross by Du Preez.

There was still time for the winner for either side and Castillo gave Amakhosi the lead in stoppage time with a volleyed shot at the back post that deflected past the legs of Keet after a cross by Saile.

City had great opportunities to force the game to extra-time as Paciencia had a header that came off the crossbar, as Chiefs defended desperately and held on to reach the semi-finals.

Here's how they lined up:

Cape Town City: Keet, Mkhize, Mokeke, Cupido, Van Heerden, Ambina, Goedeman, Rhodes, Gonzalez, Mayo, Zapata
