Nearly two years have passed since Chiefs came within touching distance of lifting their first-ever CAF Champions League title, when Amakhosi faced Pitso Mosimane's Al Ahly in the final at the time.

Chiefs gave a good account of themselves in the first half of the encounter, managing to keep the Egyptians at bay in the first half.

However, all their hard work was undone at the end of the first half when Mashiane received his marching orders for a foul on Akram Tawfik, which he received after a VAR review – something that changed the entire complexion of the match.

The Soweto giants would go on to lose 3-0 as their 10 men could not deal with Al Ahly's potent attack. At the time, there was a school of thought that Chiefs were in with a chance of winning the title, were it not for Mashiane's red card.

Now, the youngster has finally opened up on the experience.

"I was really hurt there because obviously things were going to change. We were also going to have bragging rights of winning the Champions League whenever the topic arose," he told Vodacom's Ringa Nathi.

"What I went through was painful. Even now, I still get flashbacks but it's something I'm fighting to put behind me every day. It's been a while now and I am feeling better. The more I talk about it, the more I heal from the experience," he continued.
