Chiefs Or Pirates Could Benefit From Stellies

Either Kaizer Chiefs or Orlando Pirates could have an advantage because they both clash with Stellenbosch FC this week.

Stellies may need to pick their battles wisely this week, as they face Chiefs in the league on Wednesday and will come up against Pirates on Sunday in the MTN8 semi-final first-leg.

The Cape Winelands side reached the semi-finals of the MTN8 for the first time in their history after edging SuperSport United 1-0 in extra-time.

However, unlike in their previous game before the MTN8 tie against SuperSport, where they played Polokwane City in the league (and lost 1-0), Stellies can't afford to rest players against Chiefs, as it's a big occasion for them.

If Stellenbosch prioritise the MTN8 clash against Pirates, that can work in Amakhosi's favour, who can afford to rotate the squad, ahead of their big MTN8 semi-final first-leg game as well against Mamelodi Sundowns.

And the Buccaneers could also be at an advantage, should Stellies go all out against Chiefs, as they could be fatigued for the cup game.

Stellies head coach, however, says he doesn't see any reason why they can't get positive results against the two Soweto giants in the space of four days.

"It's a very big week. I have told the players that it's a privilege to have a week like this. It's something that we want, we want to be playing in semi-finals, and we want to be playing in weeks like this against the big teams," Barker said on the club's official website.

"Worldwide they play three matches in a week and we have to look forward to it, and see it as a privilege to be able to host two big clubs in South African football within three days at Athlone. Hopefully, the fans come out in their numbers.

"We will be competitive. There's no reason we can't believe that we can get a positive result against Chiefs on Wednesday and then back that up with another positive result against Pirates on the weekend," he added.
