African Goal Machine Back On Chiefs' Wanted List

African Goal Machine Back On Chiefs' Wanted List

As one of South Africa's biggest clubs prepares for continental competition next season, their pursuit of attacking reinforcements continues with a renewed focus on an experienced international captain currently plying his trade in the Middle East.

Despite complications with other targets, the Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs appear determined to secure the services of a proven goalscorer who could make the difference in their upcoming African campaign.

Sources in the know and privy to reliable information have indicated the club has been following the progress of Michael Olunga who is currently playing in Qatar and they are happy to bring him in, if possible.

The insiders added that Amakhosi are not giving up on the Kenya national team captain who has been in good form for years in Asia, and was previously linked to the South African club.

"Of course they are looking at different options and Michael (Olunga) is back on Chiefs' radar. They are not giving up on him. The thing is they will be playing in Africa next season and they are believed to be looking at experienced strikers who could win them games at that level and Olunga is one of them and that's why they are not giving up on him," the insider told Soccer Laduma.

Meanwhile a second source stated that Chiefs are still looking at the possibility of Fiston Mayele as well, though his situation is becoming more complicated with each passing day.

"It seems there are few challenges with getting Mayele on board. It's believed that Pyramids are already planning on extending his contract and then there is interest from other Egyptian teams which make it hard for the club to meet the asking price, and apparently as much as they still want him, they are looking at other alternatives and Michael Olunga is on top of that list of strikers if they can't get Mayele," the second insider told the Siya crew.

Olunga is the Kenya national team captain and the 31-year-old is currently playing in Qatar for Al-Duhail where has has a good scoring record.

Soccer Laduma contacted Chiefs for comment on the matter but there was no response at the time of publishing.

This persistent pursuit of Olunga signals Chiefs' determination to address their goalscoring challenges ahead of what promises to be a demanding 2025/26 season. Following their Nedbank Cup triumph, the club's return to continental competition creates urgency to strengthen their attacking options with proven finishers.

Olunga's experience across multiple leagues and international football could provide the clinical edge Amakhosi have sometimes lacked. While his age at 31 might raise questions about longevity, his recent scoring record suggests he remains at the peak of his powers.

As Chiefs navigate a potentially transformative transfer window under coach Nabi, securing a striker of Olunga's calibre could be the difference between competing and conquering on multiple fronts next season.
