Sono: The Marriage Of Chiefs & Pitso That Could Have Been

Pitso Mosimane

Serial-winning coach Pitso Mosimane, known for elevating many teams to stardom regardless of their size, was previously linked to Kaizer Chiefs.

However, despite the speculation, it appears that Amakhosi are set to appoint Tunisian-born mentor Nasreddine Nabi as their new coach for the upcoming season.

Football legend, club owner, and coach Jomo Sono believes Mosimane, affectionately known as 'Jingles,' would have been an ideal match for Amakhosi.

In a candid discussion on Marawa Sports Worldwide, Sono expressed his views on what could have been a transformative partnership.

"It would've been a very good marriage because Pitso has got one advantage, it's the hard work. Even when he was a player, he used to stay behind with me. We hit the place-kicks and there was no goalkeeper," Sono told Marawa Sports Worldwide.

"I used to stay behind, and he would stay behind and he would work on these set-pieces all the time with me, he is a hard worker. Even now you can see he is a hard-worker," continued Sono.

The legendary figure, who's a renowned owner and coach of ABC Motsepe League side Jomo Cosmos, hinted that maybe the salary package of Mosimane might have been out of reach for Amakhosi.

"Whatever he has earned as a coach, he is a hard-worker and I think it would've been a very good marriage to be honest.

"I think so, I think so (on a missed opportunity at Chiefs), he has coached at the highest level, I think he should've been given a chance somewhere at Chiefs.

"I think it would've been a very good marriage, but we don't know what was happening behind closed doors."

Sono then speculated that financial considerations might have influenced the decision-making process at Chiefs.

"Maybe the dollars were too high or too low, you never know but I think it would've been a very successful marriage," Sono said.

Mosimane, who has managed teams such as SuperSport United, Mamelodi Sundowns, Al Ahly SC, and even the national team Bafana Bafana, has always seen potential in projects that aim to revive 'sleeping giants.' Reflecting on his successes, including transformative stints at Al Ahli in Saudi Arabia and Sundowns, Mosimane shared his philosophy.

"It's a very good project to be honest, and when I saw what happened in Bloemfontein with Bafana Bafana, I said 'oh, football is still alive in South Africa'. So, I said, I mean we can wake up a sleeping giant like we did with Al Ahli in Saudi.

"Now we have (Robert) Firmino, (Riyad) Mahrez, (Edouard) Mendy, (Franck) Kessie you can go on. That was not long that was a season behind (when Pitso coached them).

"Now the team is... I don't know how many billions that team is worth now. So, we could go wake up a sleeping giant also, we did it at SuperSport, we did it at Sundowns. Not saying anything negative.

"But you were there, you knew where they were - 14th on the log and I think we left the jersey at a better place," Mosimane said.

Despite his recent challenges at Abha Club where he was facing a difficult mission, which did not end well with the team's relegation from the Saudi Pro League, Mosimane's track record of success and his knack for revitalising clubs remain undisputed.
