Motaung Responds To Legal Controversy In Velebayi & Baartman Chase

Motaung Responds To Legal Controversy In Velebayi & Baartman Chase

JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA - MAY 22: Jessica Motaung during the CAF Champions League official trophy reveal at TotalEnergies South Africa Head Office on May 22, 2025

Kaizer Chiefs have responded to the legal complication with Cape Town Spurs regarding the potential signings of Asanele Velebayi and Luke Baartman, with the club's Marketing and Commercial Director emphasizing Amakhosi's commitment to following established protocols.

Cape Town Spurs have initiated legal proceedings to prevent Chiefs from acquiring the two players, maintaining that both remain under contract with the Urban Warriors despite their relegation to the ABC Motsepe League.

Speaking at the media launch of Chiefs' 2025/26 home and away jerseys at Naturena in Johannesburg, Jessica Motaung addressed the situation by highlighting the club's methodical approach to player recruitment.
"There are processes to be followed. There is a Chiefs culture of doing things at Kaizer Chiefs, both at the footballing and commercial level, there are processes to be followed. I can't speak to anything now until the club makes the announcement," Motaung told the media.

Motaung further emphasized Chiefs' commitment to ethical business practices in their transfer dealings.

"I think what's important is that we are in the business of doing things that will not interfere with other clubs. We want to follow suit, and that relates to all the players we are looking at, and are going to take a very professional approach when it comes to those players. So we will only make an announcement when the time is right. But obviously, we can not be engaging with players who are still contracted to other teams. But once things are sorted, we will make an announcement," Motaung concluded.

The dispute highlights the complex contractual situations that can arise when clubs are relegated, with Spurs clearly determined to protect their player assets despite dropping down to South Africa's third tier.
