It has been a matter of what the club says versus what the player says in the case of 'Mzansi's Finest'.
Chiefs, at the start of the 2023/24 season said it would be Khune's last as a professional player, while the 37-year-old was adamant that he still wanted to continue, though he also said that he would make peace with retiring at Chiefs as a one-club man.
With a lot of uncertainty still surrounding the Ventersdorp native, particularly after he was left out of Chiefs' pre-season tour to Turkiye where he would get the opportunity to impress the club's new technical team, Motaung provided an update on Khune's future.
"Khune is part of the family. He is like a young brother to me, [and] 25 years is a very long time. So, we are working behind the scenes, engaging with him and looking at the opportunities that we could work on together. It's a process and again, that's why I ask for patience and make sure that we make the announcements and the right ones at that," she told journalists at the Toyota Cup launch in Sandton.
Asked about Khune's desire to continue playing, Motaung said it's a process that is under revision, though an announcement on the matter is expected in the near future.
"Any player always wants to play, but it's looking at whether he can continue playing and analyzing what is possible and we are having those discussions and he's part of the family, we love him. He's been a big part of the brand and we look forward to establishing another relationship with him," she continued.
