CAF Champions League

Result: Petro de Luanda 0-0 Kaizer Chiefs

Date: 16 March 2021

Venue: Estadio 11 de Novembro

Kaizer Chiefs kept their hopes of qualifying for the CAF Champions League quarter-finals alive after securing a valuable point away to Petro de Luanda.

Chiefs made four changes from their draw against Maritzburg United, as Ramahlwe Mphahlele returned from his suspension alongside recalls for Siyabonga Ngezana, Njabulo Blom and Kearyn Baccus while Samir Nurkovic started from the bench.

Amakhosi came close to getting the opener in the 12th minute from a set-piece situation, with one of the Petro players almost conceding an own goal but shot-stopper Signori Antonio made a great save.

The hosts were putting Gavin Hunt's charges under pressure after that but the Angolan outfit lacked the cutting edge in the final third.

Tiago Azulao came close to breaking the deadlock for Petro just before the break with a header inside the six-yard box that hit the side-netting, sending the sides into the break all square.

With the game opening up after the break, Danny had a chance for Petro ten minutes into the second half with a low strike that forced a diving save out of shot-stopper Daniel Akpeyi.

Manyama almost broke the deadlock for Chiefs in the 63rd minute with a strike from a free-kick that brushed the post before he went much closer in the last 20 minutes after his goal-bound strike headed off the line after rounding the goalkeeper.

The Glamour Boys were pressurising Petro in search of the winner in the closing phase but they were forced to make a change in the last eight minutes after Mphahlele picked up an injury and was replaced by Daniel Cardoso.

Eric Mathoho had a chance to snatch the winner for Amakhosi in stoppage time after being played in by Ngezana's headed pass but he missed the target with his strike, as the sides shared the spoils, leaving Chiefs in third place with five points, equal on points with second-placed Horoya, who were also held to a goalless draw by Wydad Casablanca.

Chiefs XI: Akpeyi, Mathoho, Ngezana, Zulu, Baccus, Mphahlele, Blom, Mashiane, Manyama, Kambole, Parker

Subs: Bvuma, Cardoso, Katsande, Sasman, Frosler, Ngcobo, Nurkovic
