Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen described winning his first trophy with the club as a “dream come true” following a 2–1 Nedbank Cup final victory over Orlando Pirates at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday.

Chiefs lifted their first piece of silverware since 2015, with goals from Gaston Sirino and Yusuf Maart sealing the win. Evidence Makgopa netted the lone goal for Pirates, but it wasn't enough to deny Amakhosi a long-awaited moment of glory.
Speaking to the media after the match, Petersen opened up about the personal and collective significance of the win.
“There’s been a lot of pressure on our goalkeeping department lately, a lot of criticism,” he said.
“To be given the chance to start in a final like this, after not playing much this season, it was an emotional moment. I’ve been hunting this trophy for four years at this club, and it means everything.”
Petersen credited the entire squad for their togetherness and highlighted the importance of unity during what he called a “special day.”
“We said during the week — no regrets. No ‘I should have’ or ‘I could have.’ Just leave everything on the pitch. And I think we did that. I’m proud of every single one of my teammates, especially Yusuf [Maart]. He’s taken a lot of criticism but showed unbelievable mental strength to perform like he did today.”
Despite the rivalry and history between the clubs, Petersen said the motivation came from within.
“It didn’t matter who we played today. What mattered was ending the drought. This was about millions of people who’ve stood by us through the bad times. Before the game, we saw a video from our families and kids, and that reminded us — we’re playing for more than just ourselves.”
Reflecting on the magnitude of the occasion, Petersen admitted the moment hadn’t fully sunk in.
“I still can’t believe it happened. It feels surreal. Hopefully, this is the beginning of more trophies for the club. We want to finish the season strong, push for the top eight, and make sure we’re in a position to fight for more silverware next season,” he said.
