The story
Those who followed Vusi Lamola's career knew him to be a gifted footballer in his heyday. Now, in the nadir of his life, the legend has explained one of his famous nicknames.
The man was known variously as "Maria-Maria", "The General" or "Computer" to his avid fans as a dazzling midfielder for Kaizer Chiefs in the 70s.
Lamola, who played for the Soweto giants between 1971 and 1979, spoke to Amakhosi's media team before Saturday’s 2-1 derby defeat to Orlando Pirates at the FNB Stadium.
"Computer" spoke candidly about how that nickname came about: "My nickname was started by spectators who watched us play. Kaizer Chiefs was not just an ordinary team, it was a combination of exceptionally good players.
"One feels honoured to have been part of the team in that era," he added in a video that could continue to serve as motivation for the current crop of Chiefs stars ahead of Saturday's all-important Nedbank Cup final on Saturday.
