The story
Homeboys turned Soweto Derby rivals, Thalente Mbatha and Thabo Cele, have been dividing KwaMashu in Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates' league and cup meetings over the last two weeks.
The Durban-born midfielders, both hailing from the KwaMashu area, both understand the importance of representing their home towns on the biggest stage, with Mbatha highlighting it before the Nedbank Cup and Cele reflecting on it after Amakhosi's triumph on Saturday.
Cele, who's made 15 appearances for Chiefs since joining in January, started and battled it out in midfield with Mbatha and got revenge for the previous week's meeting in the Betway Premiership.
Speaking to SuperSport's Phumudzo Manenzhe on "Extra Time", the 28-year-old touched on sitting out of the league derby and facing Mbatha in Durban for the final.
"The derby is a derby no matter what, but this one, a final in my hometown, was a special occasion for me. I can't explain, but for me and Thalente, coming from the same area, KwaMashu, we were representing the same location, it was special for me and my people," said the Chiefs midfielder.
In June, both Mbatha and Cele will put their Soweto Derby rivalry aside to host "The Thabo Thalente Games" at the Princess Magogo Stadium in KwaMashu.
The festival of sports and culture will feature football, netball, chess, mlabalaba, a coaching clinic and a legend's game.
