Rulani Explains Why Mokoena & Co. Ground Themselves

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena has given insight on why his players, who are doing duty for Bafana Bafana, inspect the pitch while barefoot.

Check it out!

What's the story?

A picture of Grant Kekana and Teboho Mokoena walking barefoot for their recent pitch inspection in Bouake has been doing the rounds on social media, with Mokwena explaining the benefits of his two players doing so.

Rulani Mokwena is a huge advocate for walking barefoot and took to Twitter/X to further explain its benefits.

Let's take a closer look...

Mokwena explains barefoot walking benefits

Early last year, Mokwena revealed that he'd advised Cassius Mailula and a number of Sundowns players to walk barefoot.

Rulani was being quizzed on what advice he gives Mailula to keep the player's eye away from the media spotlight, mentioning that walking barefoot has many health benefits.

"Like I tell most of my players — no, serious talk, I tell them to take their shoes off and walk barefooted a lot. I do it myself. I do a lot of barefooted walking. It helps with grounding and it's important," said Rulani, who was advised by a psychologist on its benefits.

"It's part of my routine and it's the advice I give to a lot of my players; that they must walk barefooted," he said back in February 2023.

With a snap of Bafana in-form stars; Mokoena and Kekana walking barefoot during the national team's recent pitch inspection of the Peace Stadium in Bouke being circulated heavily online, Rulani has once again explained why he's advised his players to practice this:

"I've been asked by several people why I walk barefooted and get the players to walk barefooted. Here's a summarized reason why and the benefits: Walking barefoot, is also known as grounding or earthing, has been associated with several potential spiritual and physiological benefits," wrote Rulani in a tweet before adding:

"From a spiritual standpoint, walking barefoot can be seen as a way to connect with nature and the earth. It's believed to help people feel more grounded, centered, and connected to the world around them. This practice is thought to promote mindfulness and a sense of being present in the moment.

"Physiologically, proponents of grounding suggest that walking barefoot allows the body to absorb free electrons from the earth through the soles of the feet. This is thought to have antioxidant effects, reducing inflammation and improving overall well-being.

"Some small studies have shown potential benefits such as better sleep, reduced pain, and lower stress levels, although more research is needed in this area. It's important to note that while many people find walking barefoot to be a positive experience, these benefits are largely anecdotal. As with any health practice, it's best to consult with a healthcare professional before making significant changes to your routine," concluded the Sundowns boss.
