The story

21-year-old South African defender Olwethu Makhanya delivered a dramatic late winner to seal a 3-2 victory for Philadelphia Union over the New York Red Bulls in a thrilling US Open Cup quarter-final clash.

The young defender's decisive goal capped off what was described as an "ill-tempered" game by US media in heroic style and secured Union's spot in the semi-finals, showcasing his growing influence in Bafana Bafana legend, Bradley Carnell, in competitions this season.

In reflecting on his winning moment, Makhanya told CBS Sport how pleased he is to contribute to the team's winning course and backed his side to win it all this season.

"It's always good to score such important goals and be able to contribute to the team's success. So yeah, I'm feeling really good about the goal. I'm proud of myself and the effort the team put into the game," said the former Stellenbosch FC defender.

Watch below, with the Durban-born baller explaining why he feels Philly has what it takes to win the MLS and US Open titles:

Makhanya has featured in 23 MLS matches this season for the Eastern Conference table toppers, and his winner against NY made it his second goal of the campaign.
