The story
Bafana Bafana international Cassius Mailula made a special appearance at his alma mater, Tshwane University of Technology (TUT), to uplift and motivate the Varsity Football team ahead of a crucial clash against cross-town rivals, the University of Pretoria (TUKS).
Mailula, who earned a sports science degree from TUT, returned not just as a successful professional footballer but as a proud alumnus eager to give back to the institution that helped shape his career.
TUT played a significant role in Mailula's development, both academically and athletically, with the Toronto FC forward telling SABC Sport in 2023 during his last visit to his former school that his time there helped him prepare for life as a professional athlete, while securing his future with his qualification.
"It has been great because they've prepared me mentally, physically, as well, because I was in good shape. I was actually ready for any challenge that I was gonna face going back to Sundowns," he said.
"I think they have helped me a lot because I was going through a lot. I was going through a phase where I wanted to give up. I wanted to just go to school. They've helped me to realise that it's possible to focus on your school work and also on your football career," said Mailula, as quoted by SABC Sport in 2023.
Sharing his journey from university football to the professional stage, Mailula left the team with one of his Wydad jerseys and wished the Red Army well ahead of their Thursday night clash against Tuks.
