What's the story?

Algeria crashed out of the group stages for the second Africa Cup of Nations tournament in-a-row after a 1-0 defeat to minnows Mauritania on Tuesday evening.

The defeat saw the Desert Foxes finish at the bottom of Group D, which angered the nation's proud football fans, with some attempting to attack the team members at their hotel in Bouake.

Let's take a closer look at the shocking scenes...

Angry fans go after Algeria team

2019 AFCON champions suffered a shock defeat to Mauritania in the final Group D match, resulting in their premature exit from the continental showpiece.

The Algerians have gone winless at AFCON for their last six matches, stretching back from the 2021 tournament, where they endured a similarly abysmal campaign to this year's effort.

Despite having stars like Riyaad Mahrez, Houssem Aouar, Nabil Bentaleb, Islam Slimani and Rayan Aït-Nouri in their ranks, they only managed to collect two points in their group, with a 1-1 draw against group winners Angola and a 2-2 draw against Burkina Faso.

The Algerians faced significant backlash from their fans following their defeat to the Lions of Chinguetti. The frustration escalated to the point where vigilante supporters attacked the team at the hotel!

2019 AFCON-winning head coach Djamel Belmadi and the president of the Algeria Football Federation Walid Sadi were on the receiving end of the backlash from the fans, who were apprehended by Ivorian security personnel.

Watch:

The defeat to Mauritania could spell the end of Djamel Belmadi time with the Desert Fox and he'll always be considered a legend in Algeria for his masterminding their 2019 AFCON success.

The 47-year-old was escorted by stadium security as he made his way to the stands to bravely try and apologies to the livid Algerian supporters:
