The story
Kaizer Chiefs kicked off July with a bang by announcing the arrival of Ethan Chislett, who was unveiled alongside Flavio Silva and Nkanyiso Shinga last Tuesday.
Amakhosi have since gone on to announce the signings of former Orlando Pirates midfielder Siphesihle Ndlovu and fullbacks Paseka Mako and Thabiso Monyane before jetting off to the Netherlands for their pre-season tour.
All of Chiefs' signings bar Chislett and Ndlovu were assigned squad numbers upon being announced as new players, which sparked some speculation online on the possibility of the Durban-born baller claiming the jersey number of an existing player.
In the club's recent social media posts from their training sessions in Apeldoorn, Chislett was spotted donning the number 23 on his training kit.
The baller reposted the training snaps on his own IG account, where he acknowledged his popular jersey number.
Prince Sobayeni, a digital scout, talent manager and online reporter, is close to Chislett and a couple of his new Chiefs teammates, Thabo Cele and Nkanyiso Shinga.
Sobayeni revealed in an X post why Chislett is wearing the number 23, writing, "He is a big fan of basketball stars Michael Jordan and LeBron James, who use/used that number.
"Moreover, the number has become known for excellence and winning, which is what he wants to do at Chiefs. That number has a significant meaning to him due to those factors, Khosi," answered Sobayeni when quizzed by Amakhosi's X admin as to why Chislett chose the number.
