The story
Cape Town City rising star Emile Witbooi arrived in London this week to begin his four-week trial with Premier League giants Chelsea FC's Under-18 team.
The 16-year-old winger earned the opportunity after impressing the English club, who invited him for the month-long assessment.
Witbooi is not only proudly representing South African football in West London, but also following in the footsteps of his father and former Mamelodi Sundowns attacker, Surprise Ralani.
Ralani knows the journey his son is embarking on, having played in Sweden and Denmark before returning to Mzansi to play for the Citizens in the Mother City.
In speaking to Box2BoxDiski blog, Ralani is aware of the challenges that face Emile on his journey to Europe, but firmly believes that his son has what it takes to make it in Europe's top leagues.
"Europe is tough — there's no sugar-coating that. I know because I've been there myself. But Emile has shown a level of maturity beyond his years.
"I'm confident that he'll take every lesson, every challenge, and make the most of this opportunity. Chelsea is one of the biggest clubs in the world, and just to be recognised by them is an achievement," noted the Hungry Lions star.
Ralani also expressed immense pride and excitement in witnessing his son developing into a quality footballer. "Seeing Emile grow into the player he's become today is a dream come true," noted the veteran.
"As a father, nothing makes me prouder than seeing my son push his boundaries and take on challenges that can shape his future. The fact that he has this opportunity with a club like Chelsea shows that his hard work is paying off, and as a parent, I couldn't be happier," he added.
