The story
Former FC Porto striker and Kenya National Team head coach, Benni McCarthy, has paid a heartfelt tribute to his former FC Porto captain, Jorge Costa, who passed away on Tuesday at the age of 53.
McCarthy shared memorable moments with Costa during their successful spell at the Portuguese club, most notably their UEFA Champions League triumph under José Mourinho.
Benni took to Instagram to share his condolences to Costa's family, attaching an image of them lifting the Champions League title in 2004, with another snap of Mourinho's memorable Porto side lifting the Intercontinental Cup.
"My condolences to the entire family of Jorge Nuno Costa. Rest in peace, my dear Captain," wrote Benni on IG, in a post translated from Portuguese.
Jorge Costa tragically passed away from a cardiac arrest at the club's training centre, as reported by European media outlets.
The former defender played a crucial role in leading the Portuguese giants to Champions League victory under manager José Mourinho in 2004.
He also earned 50 caps for the Portugal national team. After retiring in 2006, Costa transitioned into management, holding positions at 16 different clubs before becoming the director of professional football at Porto the following season.
A graduate of Porto's academy, Costa made 324 appearances for the club, during which he won 24 trophies, including the Champions League, UEFA Cup, and eight Primeira Liga titles, before leaving in 2005.
