Kaizer Jr: Everyone Knows What Happened In 2019/20

Kaizer Chiefs Sporting Director Kaizer Motaung Jnr remains hopeful that the club's title pursuit is not done and dusted after back-to-back defeats.

Chiefs looked to be closing-in on second spot on the table coming from the FIFA World Cup break after beating Golden Arrows but they have since slipped down to fourth spot after a narrow loss against Sekhukhune United and a 4-0 humiliation by AmaZulu.

As a result, the Glamour Boys fell 19 points behind table-toppers Sundowns, whom they meet on Saturday, with a game in hand.

Motaung Jnr drew lessons from their 2019/20 season where they lost the title on the final match-day despite having a sizeable lead midway through the season.

"This is football, if there's anybody who knows the league is not won at this stage is us. I mean at one stage we were 15 points clear of Sundowns at the same mark, everyone knows what happened in 2019," Motaung Jnr said on Newzroom Afrika.

"We lost (the league title) with 30 minutes to go, so we will continue fighting. We will continue having hope."

The former Amakhosi striker vowed that they will give everything in the Nedbank Cup to end their near eight-year trophy drought, although their project is long-term.

"Nedbank Cup is a dream for all of us. We know that you win that and the conversations around (trophy) drought and everything will be put aside," he said.

"But at the same time we still know that our project is a long-term one. We know that we go with all guns blazing for the Nedbank Cup but at the same time I think nothing is over.

"I think the message to the supporters is let's rally behind the team, let's give them as support as we can. I mean this can change in a couple of months."

The 41-year old administrator carried on to stress the urgency of winning trophies, as a team of Chiefs' calibre cannot make excuses of building a team without winning and believes the team is still capable of turning things around.

"One thing we must know is that our supporters are very educated when it comes to the game of football, unfortunately at Kaizer Chiefs you have to win. You have to win comfortably, you have to win with a certain way of playing," he went on.

"I do think our supporters are definitely right. A club of our magnitude can't be sitting here not having a trophy in seven years. So that is our job.

"I think we can, I believe in the squad, I believe in the technical team, the chairman and all the stakeholders involved that we can turn things around and put a smile on their faces," he added.

Chiefs have a mammoth task ahead when they host on high-flying Sundowns on Saturday evening. The clash gets underway at 8pm.
