Mamelodi Sundowns 2-3 Orlando Pirates

Orlando Pirates started the new year with maximum points after edging Mamelodi Sundowns in a five-goal thriller on Sunday afternoon.

Pirates took the lead after 13 minutes as Boitumelo Radiopane pounced on a defensive error before firing home, while James Monyane doubled the lead three minutes later.

Sundowns pulled one back on the stroke of halftime courtesy of Riandre Vries' deflected free-kick, before Pirates restored their two-goal advantage with Radiopane completing his brace on 67 minutes.

Kabelo Moagi did reduce the deficit in the final minute to set up a nervy finish, but Pirates held on for their seventh successive win.

Kaizer Chiefs 4-5 Royal AM

Kaizer Chiefs got the new year off to a disappointing start after suffering defeat to Royal AM in a nine-goal thriller on Saturday afternoon.

It was a goal-fest at the Harry Gwala Stadium as Philani Kumalo (2), Aden McCarthy (own goal), Oratile Molehe and a late winner from Ayabulela Maxwele got the job done for Royal.

Mduduzi Shabalala, who was named Man of the Match, bagged a hat-trick for Chiefs while Jordan Sampson got the other goal for the Soweto giants.

Maritzburg United 1-1 AmaZulu

KwaZulu-Natal rivals Maritzburg United and AmaZulu could not be seperated after playing to a 1-1 draw on Saturday afternoon.

Usuthu took the lead on the stroke of halftime through captain Lanky Khoza, but the Team of Choice levelled matters thanks to Phiwayinkosi Zuma.

Sekhukhune United 2-2 Swallows

Swallows FC struck late in the second half to secure a point against Sekhukhune United on Sunday afternoon.

Sekhukhune broke the deadlock on 19 minutes courtesy of an impressive free-kick by Nkululeko Hlongo, but they were pegged back in the 33rd minute when Tinyiko Sithole converted a penalty for Swallows.

Babina Noko thought they had secured the winning goal with four minutes left on the clock through Phaleng Mashego, but Felix Mabasa ensured the Birds walked away with a point with the equaliser in the 90th minute.

Baroka FC 1-0 Golden Arrows

Tristan Nikitaridas struck in the 87th minute to hand Baroka FC a 1-0 win over Golden Arrows on Sunday morning at the Dr Molemela Stadium.
