After Mamelodi Sundowns finally completed a longer season than usual, Soccer Laduma has been given insight into where management stands with head coach Miguel Cardoso's performance.
Cardoso has been at the helm at Sundowns for about six months and came under a lot of pressure for losing the CAF Champions League final to Egyptian side Pyramids FC who made it that far for their first time in their short history.
Soccer Laduma reported that Sundowns were still backing Cardoso after the Champions League final defeat, despite pressure from many of those who were questioning his decision not to play captain Themba Zwane in both legs.
Sundowns, though, were impressive during their FIFA Club World Cup campaign, standing their ground against more fancied clubs in the competition. Competing in Group F with Ulsan HD, Borussia Dortmund and Fluminense, Sundowns finished in third place on four points, missing out on a spot in the last 16 after failing to score in their final match which ended goalless.
While the club would have loved to progress to the knockout phase of the Club World Cup, it's understood that management is pleased with the work Cardoso has done and will be backing him in the transfer window to ensure Sundowns have another go at trying to win the Champions League.
Sundowns are understood to be leading the race for Stellenbosch FC left back Fawaaz Basadien and Soccer Laduma understands that they are looking for more talent in the South American and European market.
Cardoso has built a solid relationship with his players and there is belief within the camp that they can have a better season next term, with more titles to display in the cabinet.
Pressure will be on the Portuguese coach to deliver more than just the Premiership title, which Sundowns have become accustomed to winning.
