Former Kaizer Chiefs player Mandla Masango has weighed in on the pressure and negative attention on Siyabonga Ngezana, saying players like him should be given a chance to learn from their mistakes.

Ngezana has come under a lot of criticism this season and Masango is no stranger to similar treatment, having been on the books of Amakhosi, where supporters have high expectations of what players need to deliver when they are on the pitch.

"They are in the rebuilding phase and slowly but surely you can see the identity of the club, where wingers like Sekgota take players on. It's just the final pass, but slowly but surely they are coming up nicely. It's just a matter of time. Maybe if they can get three or four additional players, then I think they will be there," the 33-year-old told media during a Carling Black Label Cup event held in Johannesburg on Tuesday morning.

"I am glad that they are giving young players a chance, like Blom, Ngezana, even though he is going through some stuff now. I think they deserve to play. If we don't give them a chance to make mistakes, how will they learn? I believe they will come right. We should not give up on them. You guys as media should also encourage, because they get a lot of social media criticism. We should try to protect our players because they are doing something that they love. It's really not a good space to be for him (Ngezana) in his life. We all come from different backgrounds, so we need to support each other."

Masango, meanwhile, did not want to say whether or not he has retired from the game. He is currently focused on business.

Asked if he has retired, Masango said; "Only God knows. I did not say yes and I did not say no."
